Top of the Adriatic and panoramic views of the island of Brac

Vidova Gora is not just a mountain on the island of Brač, but the highest point of all the islands of the Adriatic Sea, reaching 778 metres above sea level. If you want to see the island and its surrounding beauty from a bird's eye view, to admire the sunset over the neighbouring island of Hvar – this is the place to go.

How to get there

We travelled around Croatia in our own car. Our friends flew to Split airport and there was a hire car waiting for them, which they also used on the island of Brac. There is a good asphalt road leading to the top of the mountain, which branches off from the main road connecting Supetar and Bol, near the village of Knežeravanj. There is a small car park at the top.

For more active and prepared travellers, there are hiking and cycling trails. The most popular trail starts directly from Bola (staza iz Bola) and leads steeply upwards, passing through pine forests. The climb on foot takes 2 to 3 hours and requires good fitness and comfortable shoes. Cyclists also face a serious challenge, but the reward is spectacular views. Some people rent a scooter or come by taxi.

What to see

The main reason to climb Vidova Gora is definitely the panoramic view. The view from the observation deck is truly breathtaking: the famous Zlatni Rat beach lies in the palm of your hand, changing its shape, the town of Bol spreads out at the foot, and in the distance the Adriatic Sea is blue with the island of Hvar clearly visible .

On particularly clear days you can see more distant islands such as Vis and even, according to local claims, the outline of the Italian coast.
In addition to the views, at the top you can find the ruins of an old Illyrian fortress (ostaci ilirske gradine) and a small chapel of St. Vida (kapelica Svetog Vida), after whom the mountain is named. There is also an impressive television tower (televizijski odašiljač), which is an important communication facility for the whole region. I managed to climb the observation tower next to it and take sunset photos from there.

Where to eat

Vidova Gora At the top of Lookout Mountain, near the observation deck, there is sometimes a small konoba (konoba) or restaurant where you can grab a bite to eat or a refreshing drink. However, it may be seasonal, so it's worth checking in advance or being prepared for the possibility that it may be closed. Many tourists choose to bring their own food and drink and have a picnic on one of the sites with incredible views.

Entertainment

Vidova Gora is a paradise for lovers of outdoor activities. In addition to hiking (planinarenje) and trekking (pješačenje) on numerous trails, mountain biking (brdski bikiklizam) routes are popular here. For the most daring there is the possibility of paragliding – the launching pad is located on the side of the mountain and the flight over Zlatni Rat promises an unforgettable experience. And, of course, Vidova Gora is the perfect place for photography, allowing you to capture some of Croatia's most iconic landscapes.
